Death Race Update

2 08 2010

DAWG pictured above ran his 11th Death Race yesterday. He DQF’d himself at 42 km with a hip injury. The guy beside him is Jamie. His 5th DR. He took himself out at 42 with Heat exhaustion. He has completed 3 of 5 DR to date. Dawg has completed 7 of 11 Out of 500 soloists 450 made it to the start line due to training injuries and 200 completed the race.

There were multiple injuries with broken bones, dehydration, heat exhaustion and Blisters. There were a couple Helicopter airlifts and many teams and soloists missed the cut off time at the end of leg 3.

My sister Ava’s’ team “The Girl Heart Rockets” won the womans relay team race. Serena from Illinois had limited trail training smoked the first leg of 21 km in 130. Jordan of Colorado smoked the ultra tough leg 2 of 26 km in a bit over 3 hours passing several elite runners. Leg two has a steady 3200 climb and a steep 3600 decent. Its insane. Anna of Madison cruised smoothly through leg 3 of 24 km ( were still trying to figure out the poorly marked distance) down the rocky rutted logging road losing a few minutes waiting for a bear to leave the path. Tien-Tien picked up leg 4. The monstrous Mount Hammel assault and smoked it in about 4 hours 20 in spite of getting lost by 2 km. This is a continuous climb of 4200 hundred feet!! Above the tree line at 6600 feet above sea level in thin air. A crazy decent to leg 5. My sister Ava took off so fast I barely got a picture. 20 minutes in she took a bad tumble and seriously sprained her ankle ( or fracture). Another 20 minutes and she took a wrong turn due to the poorly marked course in the dusk. She descended 1000 meters to the river and had to climb back up at which time she tore her already damaged planter fascia off her heel! She came in the final 25 km in 3 hours an hour after dark. And her team Won in 14 hours 46 minutes.

It was just an incredible experience with some incredible athletes. The lead soloist completing the 125km run in 12 hours 45 minutes. Crazy. What a great experience. I will post a more philosophical blog and an amazing video shortly.

Stay tuned to see the grandeur of the Canadian Rockies
